In 1968, during the administration of US President Lyndon B. Johnson, Eartha Kitt encountered a substantial professional setback after she made anti-war statements during a White House luncheon. Kitt was invited to the White House luncheon and was asked by Lady Bird Johnson about the Vietnam War. She replied: “You send the best of this country off to be shot and maimed. No wonder the kids rebel and take pot.”
During a question and answer session, Kitt stated:
The children of America are not rebelling for no reason. They are not hippies for no reason at all. We don’t have what we have on Sunset Blvd. for no reason. They are rebelling against something. There are so many things burning the people of this country, particularly mothers. They feel they are going to raise sons — and I know what it’s like, and you have children of your own, Mrs. Johnson — we raise children and send them to war.
Her remarks reportedly caused Mrs. Johnson to burst into tears and led to a derailment in Kitt’s career

This is quite possibly the best day of my #educatorlife. Took some of my scholars to the New York Stock Exchange and it was crazy to see how engaged they were. Some even got to make a few live trades. All praises due to @mizzshanibee for the connection. They appreciate it and I appreciate you. #education #NYSE #NewYorkStockExchange #financialliteracy #EachOneTeachOne #supportyouth #community #BlackExcellence
"We want our charter!!" This was part of the board meeting that happened today where parents, school staff, community members, lawyers, education professionals and more rallied and made their voices heard in support of keeping my school open. NY12 came and covered the event. I’ll keep you all posted on developments as they happen… #educatorlife #SaveBWCCS
On the eve of my 30th birthday, I’m at a youth exhibition with art and performance pieces themed around Stop and Frisk and forms of racial brutality. Seeing this got me hella emotional because most of the people in these pictures, if all, lost their lives senselessly before they experience where I will be in a few hours. So many of them looked like me that it’s a painful reminder that I could have easily found myself amongst these photos.
I’m so incredibly grateful for the life I have, what’s in store for me and most importantly the fight I continue on their behalf and others through education.
For those interested in seeing the exhibition, it is at the Soho Gallery for Digital Art on 138 Sullivan Street in NYC from now until December 5th. The cost is free but experience is priceless. #shoutout to @morethanaquota and the powerful work these young brothers and sisters are doing. #BlackEmpowerment #supportYOUth #stoptheviolence #MoreThanAQuota #nyc #BlackUnity #supportBrothers #supportSisters #BlackPower #community #love
#tbt the boy Kendrick Lamar shedding tears on stage as some West Coast legends pass the torch down to him. I can’t wait to have that feeling of love and respect from legends on my coast. Not even for me but for the scholars I work with now and those I’ve worked with in the past. I want for them to see that you can be a success and do something positive for the people around you. I’m getting a little misty eyed just thinking of what that would be like… #hiphop #hiphopdreams #VaryusWaise
